FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Navajo County Democratic Party announces Family Votes program

Pinetop, AZ February 7, 2022 – Navajo County Democratic Party Chair Missa Foy today proudly announces the new “Family Votes” program which is aimed at recruiting, training, and supporting matriarchs as they register their families and communities to vote. This new program is an extension of year round community organizing efforts and a direct response to counter legislation that already limits rural and tribal voters.

“This is a key investment that will increase voter registration and turnout across our region,” says Foy.

The 2020 elections showed that local organizing works and it’s extremely effective, especially when led by Indigenous women. This program stretches beyond the boundaries of Navajo County and will be implemented with partners from Apache and Coconino Counties and the coalition of Northeast Arizona Native Democrats.

Family Votes will recruit matriarchs from rural and tribal communities, including the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe, and White Mountain, Yavapai, and San Carlos Apache Nations.

“Women are grounded in community and because of that they make the best advocates,” said Foy.

Volunteers will utilize relational organizing tools and strategies customized for their communities and will receive training on how to register new voters, educate current voters, and get voters to the polls this November.

Rural and tribal communities are key voting blocs in every election and more so in the 2022 midterms. A significant investment now will be essential to winning in November.

Navajo County Democratic Party, and its project Northeast Arizona Native Democrats, organize and educate voters through a uniquely Native led grassroots program that successfully increased Native voting in 2020.
